Apostille Authentication or Consular Legalisation. What is the difference?

An apostille is a special form of certification of documents intended for presentation to foreign embassies, consulates, various government agencies, or educational institutions.

Official documents, such as birth certificates, patents, legal documents, notarised powers of attorney, certificates, and diplomas are often required to be provided abroad. However, before this, the document must be translated and legalised. Legalisation in Ireland includes certification of the document in the official state bodies of the country in which the document was issued, as well as by the foreign embassy or consulate of the state in which the document will be presented. A large number of states around the world have concluded an agreement that greatly simplifies the procedure for recognising the authenticity of official documents abroad. This agreement is the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961. Apostille applies only to countries that are parties to the Convention. Consular legalisation of official documents in Ireland is a procedure for confirming the validity of the originals of official documents or confirming the validity of signatures of officials authorised to certify signatures on documents, as well as the validity of stamps or seals with which the document is approved. Sometimes documents require translation prior to legalisation. A notarised translation is a translation performed by a qualified translator and then certified by a notary. Notarisation of the translated documents (confirmation of the correctness of translation) is the certification of documents for their further submission to official authorities, or for affixing an apostille or legalisation.

THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO OFFICIALLY CERTIFY A TRANSLATION:

–  Notarisation of translator’s signature. In this case, the translation is filed with the original document or with a photocopy.

–  Notarisation of photocopies (copies) and translator’s signature.

At the same time, the notary, in addition to notarisation of the translation, officially certifies the conformity of the copy to the original and puts the stamp “copy” or “photocopy” .

Our Dublin based company cooperates with a number of notaries who can certify translations quite quickly.
