What are Apostille services?

Many world governments are signatories to the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents of 1961. This is a treaty that requires all signatory nations to officially recognise documents with another nation’s apostille certificate.

A country that does not officially recognise another nation’s Apostille, whether by its membership in the Hague Convention or by other agreement, is not required to accept that nation’s apostilled documents. Vietnam is not a part of the Hague Convention and is not required to recognise Ireland or UK Apostille certificates alone.

Instead, after being apostilled, documents from Ireland to be used in Vietnam (or vice versa), must pass through the Consular legalisation process.

What is the consular legalisation process for documents to be used in Vietnam?

Local government legalisation:

First, your documents must be legalised by the appropriate authority. For documents of Irish origin, this will be the Department of Foreign Affairs. UK documents must be legalised by the Commonwealth Office, and documents originating in or pertaining primarily to the Isle of Man, Guernsey, Jersey, etc must be sent to the Legalisation Office for that Crown Dependency specifically.

Consulate Authentication and Legalisation:

The documents must then be submitted to the Consular Section, Embassy of Vietnam, either in person or by post. Either the original documents or a certified copy must be sent in with an original apostille stamp. These must be accompanied by the Legalisation Application Form, a copy of the documents including the Apostille stamp, the appropriate fees, and a self-addressed stamped envelope for the return of the original documents (if necessary).

What types of documents can be legalised for use in Vietnam?
