Apostille Legalisation from Canada

Our Toronto office is specialising in the authentication of Canadian documents as well as legalisation of foreign documents for use in Canada.

At times, you may find yourself running into problems when it comes to using your Canadian documents in another country. That’s where we come in. We specialise in providing Notarisation and Legalisation services to clients like you, who need to have anything from a College Degree to a Power of Attorney certified for official recognition outside Canada.

Or perhaps your documents originated in a different country, and it’s imperative that you have them made officially recognisable in Canada. We’re here to help with that too.

What is Apostille?

In 1961, the “Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents” was drafted, in a bid to create a simpler method for authenticating documents to be used in other countries. This is otherwise known as Apostille.

Put simply, Apostille is a legal certification that makes a document from one country valid in another country, as long as both countries have signed up to the Hague Convention.

While over 100 countries around the world have signed up to the Hague Convention since its creation, Canada is not party to the convention. The way in which Canada’s provinces and its federal government are arranged, and the many connections and relationships that exist between them, have made it difficult for Canada to actively coordinate the necessary agreement required to join the convention, and so they have their own process of Notarisation and Legalisation that must be followed.

Notarisation and Legalisation in Canada

As we’ve already shown you, Apostille is impossible in Canada, and instead the country requires that documents go through a thorough and rigorous process of Notarisation and Legalisation.

The types of documents that require Notarisation and Legalisation are similar to those that would require Apostille in other countries. Let’s say you’re taking a job in a foreign country and your employer needs your education records, those degree and qualification certificates will require Notarisation and Legalisation. Likewise, if you are executing a Power of Attorney in another country, the process will have to be followed. The same can be said for vital personal records like birth, marriage, and death certificates. It’s the same for criminal background checks – the list goes on and on.

The whole process in Canada is complicated, with many strict rules that must be adhered to. There are requirements around the use of different languages, a specifically ordered process that documents must go through, and various government agencies which must be involved at each stage of the process. Many people have fallen foul of the rules in Canada which have cost them all-important time and money in rectifying mistakes. That’s why it’s vital that you use an expert agent to manage the process for you. We have copious amounts of experience working within this Canadian process, have worked through and are acutely aware of the many pitfalls that can trip clients up when they try and go it alone, and already have relationships in place with the various government agencies that will allow us to expedite the process for you in a secure manner.

What services can we provide?

We provide several services for clients both in Canada and abroad. We offer certified translations which can be legalised quickly, as we operate our own translation company – certifiedtranslations.ie – which allows us to work efficiently and accurately on your behalf. This is an especially valuable service when working on Canadian processes, as there are strict guidelines surrounding translation in Canadian Notarisation and Legalisation. We also have our own visa company – visaworld.ie – so we can provide all manner of visa services, including having documents legalised for use in visa applications.

We also offer notarial services to our clients – anything from drafting and witnessing Powers of Attorney to certifying documents for immigration and emigration. This is alongside our Apostille and Legalisation services, including working closely with Global Affairs Canada.
